I decided to replace the original filter on my GE refrigerator after about 10 months when the "change filter" light came on. I went to the local hardware store and found a replacement for $49 plus tax. It seemed expensive, so I decided to check Amazon instead and found these along with the OEM GE filters.
I was reluctant to try a filter other than the GE just to save a few bucks, but if they are identical, why waste money? Besides, Brita is probably better known than GE for filters. Anyway, the filter looks, fits and works just like the original. I have noticed no difference in water flow or noise. The water tastes clean and looks clear.
One note - as per the instructions you should pre-fill the filter at the tap before installation and then run about 10 glasses of water through the new filter before use to stabilize the flow.
As for the vendor - Fridge Filters, I found that you cannot track their packages online as you can with most things purchased from Amazon, but the filter arrived in Florida 4 days after my order was placed. I gave the product and the vendor 5 stars, not that I get particularly excited about a water filter, but there were no negatives to take a star away.

You wouldn't think installing a water filter in a refrigerator is rocket science but apparently some people have had trouble with these filters. We use them and haven't had any trouble. If you follow the instructions you won't have any either. They're pretty straightforward:
- Fill the new filter with water. Tap the sides of the filter and add water if necessary, until the bubbles stop coming up.
- After the new filter is installed, run the water dispenser for 3 minutes.
It's that simple. We still get a few minor sputters after running the dispenser but that goes away quickly. The flow doesn't seem any less than through a new GE filter and the water tastes fine.
To remember when to change it write the date on the filter with a permanent marker after the filter's installed (so you can see the date clearly). |

| I bought this because of Brita's name recognition and that it was cheaper than the original GE filter. As others have said it may be just a little slower flow than the GE, but it's hardly noticable. |

| After reading some of the previous reviews, I was a little hesitant to try the Brita out. I had no reason to worry, as it works like a champ and cost less than the GE OEM filter. The one trick I realized was that you couldn't just pour water in the center hole and expect it to fill the filter. The center hole fills up quickly, but doesn't actually fill up the entire filter. I had to pour water in the gaps around the center hole to truly fill the filter. You'll know when it's full, because it weighs considerably more than it does empty. |

We just switched from the GE filter to Brita and couldn't be happier. The Brita-filtered water comes out crystal clear and tastes delicious - much better than the GE-filtered water.
Installation was easy, just follow the advice of Paul Gifford (April 29, 2008 review). I think the water flow is slightly better as well.
The price on Amazon cannot be beat, either. Much less expensive than the GE filter. |

| I purchased this filter a few months ago for my GE Monogram refrigerator and I was a little worried when I first installed it because it's a bit smaller than the GE MWF filter that it replaced. But it fits and works exactly the same. Four months with no problems. |

| The Brita fileter works just as well as the GE one I had previously, and it was much cheaper. I have had no problems with loudness or poor water flow. I can't speak to how long it lasts because I have only had it for about a month. I will definately buy another when needed to save money over the GE brand. |

The individuals complaining about reduced flow/noise most likely incorrectly installed the filter cartridge. The directions state the the filter must be filled with water before being installed. This step eliminates the problems with air in the lines and a "buzzing" sound that are being reported.
The Brita filter, so far as I can tell, is identical in every way to the OEM, and does exactly the same job, a few dollars cheaper. |

A GE Repairman indicated that all appliances will break, but that GE's model is specifically designed so that a network of repairmen continue to bring revenue back to the company. He also noted that all GE appliances have diagnostic devices, and that GE doesn't share its diagnostic codes with the industry in order to protect its turf. While I can understand how this makes for good business and revenue, it unsettled me. My refrigerator was a lot of money. When I purchased it, I was looking for an appliance, not a hobby. So when it came down to whether I buy the GE water filter or go with a third-party, I had no problem looking for third-party filters. The Brita filters work just as well (if not better) than the GE filters. The filter that came with the refrigerator worked for a little over 2 mos, and then the "Change Filter" alarm went off. I spoke with the same repairmen who noted that as long as water passes through the filter, they're still safe to use. He also told me that the reason that the alarm goes off is to try to get you to purchase more filters... again, more revenue.
While from what I understand pretty much all appliances nowadays are of the same quality, I wasn't too happy with the fact that GE keeps expecting me to spend money on an already incredibly expensive appliance, manufactured overseas, and according to the repairman, "Made to break." If anything, the price of filters should be going down, but GE's prices seem to just be going up. The Brita filters are just a smart move. |

| This filter meets expectations, so far no complaints. It is not GE brand but it saved me a couple of dollars, and gets the job done. The only difference that I notice is the label instead of GE is Brita and works perfect. |

| The Brita filter company has a good reputation. This filter lives up to that reputation. This is the first time I bought the Brita filter instead of the GE OEM filter. I wanted to try the Brita filter for two reasons - the reputation Brita has and because it was less expensive than the GE OEM filter. I have not been disappointed. The next time I'll buy the multi-pack and save a little more. |

| I am happy I ordered this filter, the filter it replaced cost $10 or more than this one, and the last two I bought didn't work well. I had to buy an adapter to get this filter to work, but since I got both for under $40 and the replacement filters in the future are about $30, I am happy!! The filter works well in my GE fridge. |
